Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in our solar system. Humans first established permanent settlements on the surface of Mars in 2068.

Mars is nowhere near as developed as the Moon and has not been terraformed. Colonies on Mars mostly consist of very small underground settlements. Mars is still primarily used as a site for deep space exploration programs as it is much cheaper and easier for probes and rockets to leave from Mars than from Earth. Most Martians are workers on multi-year tours, although some choose to stay there permanently. Mars has been compared to the popular culture depictions of the Wild West. Neighbouring homesteads are miles apart. There is very little legal oversight, almost no Mirror presence, and lot of illegal activity takes place there.

There are rumours that various global and corporate powers want to start from scratch and terraform Mars to create new settlements. This would mean the destruction of all the current settlements and undoubtedly the loss of some lives of those who will refuse to give up their homesteads.
